Viewing platform

From the platform you have a great view of the sea and beyond you can see the Lovrijenac fortress, which is located on the western side of the old town, outside the city walls, on a 37-meter-high cliff. It is also known as the "Gibraltar of Dubrovnik". Lovrijenac Castle, with its triangular shape and three levels, was once home to 10 large cannons. The most famous of them was the "lizard", which guarded the seaward walls, the thickness of which reached up to 12 meters. Interestingly, the eastern side of the fortress, facing Dubrovnik, was built with walls only 60 centimeters thick. It was a strategic decision – if the enemy had captured the fort, it could have been easily destroyed right in front of the city walls and the Bokar fort. The inscription above the fortress door, "Non Bene Pro Toto Libertas Venditur Auro", reminded everyone that freedom cannot be sold for all the gold in the world, reflecting the steadfast spirit of the city.
