Stradun, also known as Placa, is the main promenade in Dubrovnik’s Old Town and one of the city’s most famous and lively streets. This historic street is in the heart of the old town, stretching from Pile Gate to Ploče Gate in the east.
Stradun runs through the old town, connecting the two main city gates - Pile and Ploče. The street was built in the 13th century when Dubrovnik’s Old Town was still in its infancy. Historically, Stradun was the center of commerce and social life, where merchants and artisans sold their wares.
The street is paved with bright white stones that eminate an extraordinary glow in the sun. Its baroque buildings were built after the devastating earthquake of 1667. Stradun is known for its beautiful baroque and renaissance buildings, which are well preserved and give the street a special historical feel.
The street is always full of life, being a popular spot with locals and tourists alike. There are numerous shops, cafes, restaurants and bars here. Stradun is also an important venue for cultural events, including festivals and other public events.
A walk on the Stradun offers an opportunity to enjoy the historical atmosphere of Dubrovnik, admire the architecture, go shopping and enjoy local delicacies. The street is especially beautiful at sunset, when the baroque buildings and cobbled street begin to shine in the evening light.
Stradun is the heart and soul of Dubrovnik, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the city’s historical charm and vibrant culture. Its importance, both historically and today, makes it one of the most memorable and essential places to visit in Dubrovnik.
