Walking from Stradun to the cathedral in Dubrovnik, you can come across the bronze statue of Marin Držić, dedicated to one of Croatia’s most famous writers and playwrights. He is affectionately known as the "Shakespeare of Dubrovnik" and his works, especially his comedies, are still appreciated today for their sharp social poignancy and depiction of Renaissance realities.
The statue of Marin Držić is the work of Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Meštrović is known for his striking and expressive sculptures, often depicting Croatian historical and cultural figures. The statue depicts Držić in a seated position, offering passers-by an opportunity to pause and reflect on the contribution of this Renaissance writer to Croatian literature.
An interesting detail in the figure is the bullet hole in his neck. Although there is no definite explanation as to its origin, this element adds to the mystique and historical feel of the statue. The statue’s shiny spots, especially around the nose, are due to people’s custom of rubbing it for good luck and taking photos on the statue’s lap. The practice has become popular among tourists, although it may be frowned upon by local heritage enthusiasts.
The statue of Marin Držić is not only a work of art, but also a reminder of Dubrovnik’s rich literary and cultural heritage. Držić’s works, especially his comedies, offer a unique insight into Renaissance society and continue to be relevant today.
