The Church of St. Blaise in Dubrovnik, dedicated to the city’s patron saint, is a truly extraordinary sacred building, combining deep historical and spiritual meaning with architectural beauty. This church is one of Dubrovnik’s most prominent landmarks and an important part of the city’s cultural heritage.
The current Church of St. Blaise was built in 1715 to replace a 14th-century Romanesque church that was destroyed in a devastating fire in 1706. The church was designed by the Venetian master Marino Gropelli in 1706 and is built in the luxurious Venetian Baroque style, showing Gropelli’s craftsmanship and sense of style.
Saint Blaise has been the patron saint of Dubrovnik since the 10th century. According to the legendary story, he saved the city from a night attack of the Venetians by revealing himself to the priest Stojko and revealing the insidious intentions of the enemy.
The church houses a silver statue of Saint Blaise, one of Dubrovnik’s most important religious relics. The statue miraculously escaped the fire of 1706 unscathed. The city model in the statue’s hand reveals the architecture of Dubrovnik at that time.
St. Blaise’s Day, which is celebrated on February 3rd, is also considered Dubrovnik City Day.
Although Game of Thrones was filmed in many locations in Old Town Dubrovnik, St. Blaise Church was not specifically used in the series. However, its baroque beauty and the towers that make up the city’s skyline have definitely contributed to the visual atmosphere of the series, especially when it comes to King’s Landing.
The Church of St. Blaise is not only a spiritual symbol, but also a major cultural heritage that enriches the Old Town of Dubrovnik. Its historical value, connection with the city’s legends and architectural beauty make it one of the most visited and revered sacred buildings in the city.
