Sponza Palace

Sponza Palace, located at the end of Placa (Straduni) Street in the Old Town of Dubrovnik, is one of the most beautiful and historically important buildings in the city. Its unique Gothic-Renaissance architecture and rich history make it one of Dubrovnik's most prominent attractions.

The Sponza Palace was built between 1516 and 1522 and has preserved its original form. This is a good example of how most of Dubrovnik's public and private palaces might have looked before the 1667 earthquake. The name of the palace "Sponza" comes from the word "Spongia" ('alluvium'), referring to the former use of the building site as a rainwater catchment.

During the Republic, the customs office and customs warehouse were located in the palace, due to which it was often called "Divona" (dogana - "customs"). The Sponza Palace housed several state offices, including the mint, bank, treasury, and armory. The palace was designed by the protomaster (chief architect) Paskoje Miličević and its project was completed in 1522.

The Sponza Palace is a building with a rectangular courtyard, with an open veranda on the first and second floors. The building's architecture is a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles, typical of the Dubrovnik Republic at that time. The porch and sculptural decorations were made after 1516 by the Andrijić brothers from Korčula and other stone carvers.

Unscathed by the 1667 earthquake, the Sponza Palace remained one of the few surviving historical buildings, helping to maintain the activities of the Republic of Dubrovnik. Today, the Sponza Palace houses Dubrovnik's most important cultural institution, the archive, which finds its home on the ground floor. The Sponza Palace plays a special role in the opening ceremony of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, where the rector and members of the council welcome actors and musicians who have come to entertain the city.

Sponza Palace is an important part of Dubrovnik's rich cultural heritage, offering both history and modern cultural life. Its unique architecture and historical features make it one of the most important and interesting attractions in the city.
