Orlando’s column, located on Stradun in Dubrovnik, in front of the Church of St. Blaise, is one of the most significant and historically important monuments of the city. This stone sculpture is an important symbol that reflects the history and culture of the city.
The Orlando Column was built in 1417 and depicts Roland, who according to legend was a knight in Charlemagne’s army and the central character of the "Song of Roland". Similar monuments were erected all over Europe, but the one in Dubrovnik is special in terms of its historical importance and traditions.
According to one legend, Roland defended Dubrovnik from the Saracens at the end of the 8th century, for which a pillar was erected as a sign of gratitude. Although this story may not be historically true, Orlando’s pillar has always been very important in Dubrovnik. It has been used to read important announcements and hoist the city flag.
It is particularly interesting that the Orlando cubit, which was 51.2 cm long, was used to measure length in Dubrovnik. This measurement was marked on both Orlando’s forearm and the base of the statue. Although no longer performing a measuring function today, the pillar is still an important ceremonial site.
Today, the flag of Croatia flies on the pillar, and during the celebrations of Saint Blaise, it is decorated with a flag with the image of a lion. The start and end of the Dubrovnik Summer Games are also celebrated at the pillar, where the Libertas flag is raised and lowered.
