Monument to the poet Ivan Gundulić

The Ivan Gundulić Monument in Dubrovnik is a tribute to one of the city’s most famous poets and writers, Ivan Gundulić. This monument is located in Gundulić Square, a lively and historical place in the heart of Dubrovnik.

Gundulić Square is known as the heart of the city, where the morning green market takes place. Fruits and vegetables grown in the fertile fields around Dubrovnik, such as Konavle, Primorje and Župa, are sold here. In the evenings, the square transforms into a unique venue for the Dubrovnik Festival, attracting locals and visitors alike. This contrast between day and night especially fascinates the actors who come to Dubrovnik in the summer.

The monument itself consists of the famous Ivan Gundulić bronze statues created by the sculptor Ivan Rendić and erected in 1892. The four low-relief panels at the base of the monument depict scenes from Gundulić’s most important epic, Osman, one of his best-known works.

Ivan Gundulić was born in 1589 in Dubrovnik into an old and respectable aristocratic family. During his life, he wrote a large number of plays and works, including "Osman", "Dubravka" and "Tears of the Prodigal Son". He is known by the nickname Mačica.

Gundulić Monument and Square are important cultural and historical sites in Dubrovnik, offering visitors the opportunity to delve into the city’s rich literary and cultural heritage. The monument and its location on the square commemorate Ivan Gundulić’s contribution to Croatian literature and his importance in the history of Dubrovnik.
