Lokrum Island is a real gem in the Adriatic Sea, just a short boat ride from Dubrovnik’s east coast. Covering 72 hectares, the island offers both historical and natural beauty, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
Fort Royal Castle, built by the French in 1806, is located at the highest point of the island. The fortress offers breathtaking views of Dubrovnik and the surrounding coast. The island has a rich history, including a former Benedictine monastery founded in 1023, whose monks used the island’s location to warn the people of Dubrovnik of potential attackers from the sea.
A special attraction of the island is the Mrtvo More (Dead Sea), a crystal clear and calm lake perfect for bathing. Lokrum is home to many wild peacocks, adding an exotic and fairytale atmosphere to the island.
Lokrum is also known as a filming location for Game of Thrones. There is a visitor center on the island with an exhibition dedicated to the filming of the series in Croatia, including an interactive map showing all the filming locations in Croatia. At the center of the exhibit is a replica of the famous Iron Throne from Game of Thrones, where visitors can sit and take pictures. Locations for the Qarth garden scenes were filmed in the Lokrum Botanical Gardens and former Benedictine monastery.
Today, Lokrum is a popular holiday destination where visitors can enjoy natural beauty, history and tranquility. Apart from the natural and historical attractions, Lokrum Island is also a beloved spot for birdwatching and flora watching.
Lokrum Island is the perfect place to spend the day, offering visitors a rich history, beautiful nature and exciting connections with pop culture, especially for Game of Thrones fans.
