Lokrum Botanical Garden

A heartwarming tropical oasis, the Lokrum Botanical Garden hides on the idyllic island of Lokrum near Dubrovnik. This garden is home to an amazing variety of plants, engaging visitors in greenery full of exotic flowers and rare tree species from different corners of the world.

Established during the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the second half of the 19th century, the garden is known today for its rich history.

Legends say that the mysterious Richard the Lionheart once rested here after a shipwreck in the rough waves of the Adriatic Sea. When you visit, you can feel the aura of history, walk along the beds containing more than 500 different plant species, and admire the mirror-smooth pond, which brings out the peace and quiet of the area. Colorful butterflies dance on the flowers, and visitors have the opportunity to learn about the adaptation of plants to the Mediterranean climate. Not only for botany lovers and history buffs, but for everyone who appreciates primitive nature and European history, the Lokrum Botanical Garden in Dubrovnik is like a hidden gem.

Lokrum Botanical Garden and more generally Lokrum Island itself is associated with the popular TV series "Game of Thrones", which has been filmed in several different locations around the world, including Dubrovnik, Croatia. Lokrum Island and its botanical gardens were chosen as one of the filming locations for the series, due to its natural beauty and historical atmosphere, which were perfect for creating the imaginative world of the series.

Lokrum Botanical Gardens and its surroundings were used in Game of Thrones to depict the exotic and mysterious city of Qarth, located on the continent of Essos. The city of Qarth is described in the series as "the greatest city in the world" and is one of the main locations on Daenerys Targaryen's journey in the earlier seasons of the series.

In addition to filming in the botanical garden, the Benedictine monastery on the island was used to create a unique and believable setting for the TV series.

For "Game of Thrones" fans, Lokrum and its botanical gardens have become a popular tourist destination, where you can visit the filming locations and feel as if you are a part of the fantasy world of the series. The island even has a small exhibit dedicated to Game of Thrones, including a replica of the Iron Throne where visitors can sit and take photos.

The inclusion of Lokrum Botanic Gardens as a Game of Thrones filming location has added value to the location, highlighting its natural beauty and historic atmosphere, making it attractive to fans of the series as well as general visitors who enjoy the beautiful nature and cultural history.
