Kamena Sova Dubrovnik

The Kamena Onofrijeva fountain in Dubrovnik, also known as the stone owl or the stone masquerade, is an interesting and mystical sight located on the main street of Stradun, at the entrance to the Franciscan monastery. More than just an architectural detail, it’s a part of urban legend and local customs.

Several decades ago, this stone structure was used to drain water collected on the roof. Today, its practical function has been replaced by a cultural meaning.

A stone resembling an owl’s head or mask protrudes from the wall about half a meter above the ground. Its surface is polished and the top of the wall is discolored from the touches of thousands of tourists’ hands.

According to an old legend, stepping on or balancing on a rock brings luck and love to those who do it. Some versions of the legend even say that you have to stand shirtless on the owl’s head to keep your balance. According to Croatian media, this Dubrovnik ritual originated from a story of unrequited love, where a young man tried for a long time to succeed in this feat in order to change his fate.

The Kamena Onofrijeva Fountain is not only an interesting historical detail, but also part of Dubrovnik’s rich cultural heritage and urban legends. It offers visitors the opportunity to participate in a local tradition, adding a unique and memorable experience to their visit to Dubrovnik.
