Jesuit Staircase, Dubrovnik

The Jesuit Staircase in Dubrovnik is an outstanding Baroque architectural heritage and one of the most photogenic places in the city. Designed by the Roman architect Pietro Passalacqua, the staircase is known for its grandeur and aesthetic beauty, which highlights elements of the Baroque style.

The staircase was built in 1738 and is similar in design to the famous Roman Spanish staircases. The construction and design of the staircase emphasize the prominent location of the Jesuit College (Collegium Ragusinum) and the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola.

The Jesuit Staircase is not only architecturally significant but also part of Dubrovnik’s rich cultural heritage. At the bottom of the stairs is Gundulić Square, where there is a market selling fresh products from the neighboring villages. This square and market highlight the city’s historic lifestyle and community center.

The Jesuit Staircase has become even more famous for being one of the filming locations for a memorable scene in Game of Thrones, the stairwell of Baelor’s magnificent septic staircase in the King’s House, from which Cersei Lannister began her infamous Walk of Atonement in Season 5 Episode 10, "Mother’s Grace."

The Jesuit Staircase is also one of the main venues for a number of events and performances as part of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, underscoring its cultural importance in the city. The staircase’s unique design and location have made it a popular spot for both locals and tourists who want to enjoy the city’s beauty and history.

The Jesuit Staircase in Dubrovnik is more than just a staircase – it is a place where history, art and pop culture meet, creating a unique and memorable experience for every visitor.
