Located just a short boat ride from Dubrovnik, Lokrum Island is home to the historic Fort Royal, which offers visitors a fascinating insight into the region's rich history. Built during the reign of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in the early 19th century, this fortress is known for its impressive architecture and strategic location, offering breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and Dubrovnik's Old Town.
Legends say that the island hides an ancient treasure and that it has been placed under a curse that prohibits overnight stays on the island, adding a mystical air to the places.
The history of the region dates back to ancient times, when Lokrum was an important stop for merchants and seafarers. In the 11th century, Benedictine monks founded a monastery on the island and started planting exotic plants, as a result of which rare plant species can still be admired in the Lokrum Botanical Garden.
In the 15th century, Lokrum became a favorite retreat for the nobility of the Republic of Dubrovnik, where they built summer estates surrounded by lush gardens and orchards. Fort Royal itself has witnessed many historical events, including the Napoleonic Wars and later the rule of the Austrian Empire.
Today, Fort Royal is popular with history and nature lovers.
Walking among the ruins of the fortress, you can feel the breath of history and imagine what life was like on the island centuries ago. Boats to the island depart regularly from Dubrovnik Old Town, making Lokrum and its historic Fort Royal an ideal day trip for those wishing to experience the pearl of the Adriatic and its rich historical heritage.
