Fort Lovrijenac

Lovrijenac Fortress, often known as the "Gibraltar of Dubrovnik", is one of the most prominent and historically important fortresses in Dubrovnik. Located on the seashore, on a 37-meter-high cliff outside the western side of Dubrovnik's Old Town, this impressive fortress offers unparalleled views of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding city.

Lovrijenac Castle was originally built in the 11th century as a defensive structure to protect the city from attacks from the sea. The fort is triangular in shape and three-level, with walls up to 12 meters thick towards the sea. On its eastern side, facing Dubrovnik, the walls are only 60 centimeters thick. This was a strategic decision so that the fort would be easily captured and destroyed if it fell into enemy hands. Above the entrance to the fortress is the famous stone carving: "Non Bene Pro Toto Libertas Venditur Auro" ("Freedom cannot be sold for all the gold in the world").

Today, Lovrijenac Castle is a popular tourist attraction and is often used to host various cultural events, including theater performances and concerts. The castle is also known as one of the filming locations of Game of Thrones, where it has depicted several locations in Westeros.

A visit to Lovrijenac Fortress offers an opportunity to experience Dubrovnik's historical and architectural heritage. Visitors can enjoy amazing panoramic views over the old town, the sea and the nearby islands.

The fortress can be reached on foot from the old town, following the path that leads to the fortress on the rock. Opening times and ticket prices may vary, so it is recommended to check for up-to-date information before visiting.

Lovrijenac Fortress is an important part of Dubrovnik's rich history and cultural heritage and offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the city's historical beauty and military architecture.
