The Amerling Fountain, also known as "Onofrio’s Large Fountain" (Veliki Onofrijev Izvor), is one of Dubrovnik’s most prominent and historically significant landmarks. It is located at the entrance to the Old Town of Dubrovnik, close to the Pile Gate.
The Amerling Fountain was built in the 15th century as part of the city’s water system, designed and built by Neapolitan architect and engineer Onofrio della Cava. The fountain was part of a larger project to supply the city of Dubrovnik with water.
The original structure was damaged by an earthquake in 1667, it was later restored, but not entirely to its original glory.
The fountain is circular in shape and surrounded by 16 arched niches. Above each niche is a mascaron from which water flows.
In its center is a large dome decorated with sculptures and reliefs.
The Amerling Fountain has been an important meeting place for local residents and visitors throughout history. It has been both a social center and a source of practical water supply.
Today, the fountain is one of Dubrovnik’s best-known attractions and a popular photo spot among tourists.
The fountain is located on Stradun, Dubrovnik’s main street, which is the city’s main pedestrian area and connects Pile Gate with Ploče Gate.
The Large Fountain of Amerling, or Onofrio, is a great example of historical architecture and the development of the city’s infrastructure, offering visitors a chance to see how medieval cities supplied their inhabitants with water. Its historical and aesthetic value make it one of the main attractions of Dubrovnik.
