When you visit the old town of Dubrovnik, you are stepping back in time, where history, tradition and modern life intertwine. This UNESCO World Heritage city is home to around 1,000 permanent residents whose daily lives are closely linked to their ancestral heritage.
Old town houses are distinctive and practical. Most of them have shops on the ground floor that attract tourists with their handicrafts and local delicacies. Higher up are the living quarters where the residents spend their weekdays. What makes these houses special is that the kitchen is usually located on the upper floor. This tradition dates back to a time when fire was a real threat. Since the houses are built very close to each other, the location of the kitchen on the upper floor helps prevent the spread of fire and ensures a safer evacuation of people.
In the evenings, when the sun sets and a soft light falls on the streets of the old town, neighbors often gather in each other's kitchens to eat dinner together. It is part of their social life, creating a strong sense of community.
There is also a fun fact that is spreading about the Old Town of Dubrovnik. Namely, it is said that in the old days, when men were looking for a partner, they watched how women hung their laundry to dry. Neatly hung laundry - socks together and shirts neatly next to each other - was considered a sign of a good housekeeper. It may seem odd today, but it is part of the city's colorful legends and traditions.
Life in the Old Town of Dubrovnik is a mixture of history, culture and living traditions, all of which together create its special and memorable atmosphere. Here, every visitor can feel how the past and the present go hand in hand, creating something truly unique and magical.
